Mechanical Hand

Inspired by biomedical prosthetics like Oscar Pistorius’s “Blade Runner” legs and cosplay accessories such as digitigrade legs, the mostrous mechanical hand serves to extend the wearer’s natural hand. The hand is made from laser-cut acrylic segments and aluminum tube joints (prototypes were made from baltic birch, also laser-cut), and moves according to the movements of the person wearing it. Each finger is fully independent from the others.

Input from the wearer’s hand only directly affects the first finger segment of the hand, which connects the first and second knuckles. When this segment is rotated relative to the knuckle joint at its base, it rotates the second and third segments proportionally. Hypothetically, more than three segments could be assembled in this manner, although it requires successively more force with each added segment.
